What is the best family dog for us!?
So my family is thinking about getting a dog for christmas… but it must be the PERFECT dog for us. Our family has 4 kids, ages 14, 12, 10, and 7.
The dog must be:
-Child tolerant: as our youngest child loves dogs and sometimes likes to put our friends dog on the leash and drag her around.
-non agressive: although our youngest loves dogs, aggressive ones are scary.
-small: absolutely no taller than knee hight, not heavier than 12 lbs.
-playful: the kids would love a playful fun dog, but the exercise requirements can’t be too extreme, must have a good disposition. probably not a terrier.
-somewhat quiet: no yappy dogs. period. (:
-easy to train: but be obedient and a quick learner, but also somewhat intelligent.
-kind to all: strangers, other pets, other dogs etc.
-low shedding: cannot deal with a frenzy of dog hair! (:
-must be able to be alone at home for some period of time: up to 4 hours a day when it is older (not a puppy of corse!)
We would like to purchase a puppy. If you know of breeds that meet these requirements please comment! I know this is a lot to match but getting a dog is a huge commitment for us and it needs to be the right breed! Thanks!
haha sorry the requirements are soo strict… it dosn’t have to match them all perfectly!
haha buy a stuffed animal! i love it! (: ur funny!
stuffed animals are cute…. (:
opps i ment 20 lbs not 12 lbs
GET A PUG
pugs are small, non aggressive, cuddly, extremely kid friendly, don’t require alot of excersise (just make sure to walk it periodically during the day, but not extreme walks because their noses can’t handle being out of breath LOL) they’re happy being alone during the day (they’ll just sleep :3 ) just makesure they’ve been fed and walked before hand. theyre very intelligent and easy to train as long as you have treats ;D
theyre also magic. not even kidding LOL, if you can’t sleep, put one on your belly and you’ll be out like a light
edit: also their fur is short and doesn’t require alot of grooming like long hair dogs (no need to cut it or comb it really)
the only thing though is with a pug you must be willing to let it be with you, because thats what makes them happy is being with their people :3 not all the time but say your sitting on your couch relaxing or something, let it come sit on your lap and sleep. they;ll rest their chin on your arm, you’ll say "AW" and both will be happy
edit edit:
also, if you think about getting a pug, i recommend a female pug

shih tzu’s are great. they are very quiet but still small. they dont hardly shed. mine is the nicest dog ever and loves kids. the neighbor kids come over all the time to walk him. hes very smart. they only thing that was a little tedious was that he didnt take to potty trining very fast. he is potty trianed now, but you have to be dedicated to training him. hope this helped.

The best dog for you is a wheaten terrier. They are very friendly and are sertanly non aggrasive! They dont shed and they are hypoallergenic. Wheatens are bigger than 12 lbs. but wouldn’t hurt a fly. Our dog is a wheaten and she is the sweetest thing in the world! We got our dog from harden hills ranch, a breeder. These dogs are absolutly smart and cute. They ae great with kids and love to play(very energetic. They are not ruff. They do not bark that much.(hardly ever!)

I have a mim=niture schnauzer and he is great with my 12 yo daughter. She is pretty rough with him but he keeps coming back for more and never bites De

I would have to say Shih tzu’s! Minature poodles also make great pets.
They are highly intelligent. Both breeds shed very little.
ADD ON: I just wanted to add on what Dork just said. Pugs make great pets but make sure your children arent rough. If you squeeze pugs really hard, their eyes will come out of their eye socket.
Another add on: Here’s a dog breed selector. Easy 10 questions and they will choose dogs that are suitable for you! Good luck

Easy, just go to our local shelter/rescue and they can match the perfect dog for you!!
I would recomend either a poodle or sheltie, even though those dogs need some grooming. maybe a bichon frise.
a bigger dog that is the best is a soft coated weaten terrier, they barely even act like terriers!!
Someone said beagle, dont those dogs never shut up!!
good luck.

a havenise puppy is the best.
she is not going to get biggger than 10 punds
she never barks only sometimes when she gets really excited.
my sister was terrifed of dogs and the 2nd day we had our dog my sister was loving on her and picking her up.
she stays home by herself while we are at school and work
she is hypoallagenic. that just mean they are non shedding and people who are alleric to them can have one.
she is not a good guard dog. she ALWAYS licks everyone. she is so sweet and kind. also very playful
the 2nd day we had her she learned not to go in the rooms with carpet. and also sit and lay.
she is not aggersive she thinks she is big but she really isnt!
she always wants to cuddle wioth you and be with you.
be fore we got one i have never heard of one but im glad we got one. she is the absolut best dog ever.
hope i helped!

I have two good choices that meet most of your requirements, but you must know in order to get your dog the way you describe, you have to put alot of effort, time, and commitment to train, socialize and care for it. To ensure a really well behaved dog, i’d take the puppy to some obedience classes. Anyway, you can either buy an BULLDOG or a STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER. These dogs are great with kids(contrary to popular belief that pitbulls are aggressive, they are very loving, especially with children and very tolerant as well) and have minimum shedding, They both stand below your knee, Both are playful and need exercise, though the staffie will need more exercise than the bulldog, btoh are relatively quite dogs, only barking to alert you, both dogs are smart, but the staffie is more intelligent and in tune with its people, both are very people friendly, but the staffie tends to be more prone to dog aggressiveness(as these dogs were originally used for DOG fighting and are prone to dog aggressiveness, but ARE NOT people aggressive. If you’ve met an people aggressive staffie, then they either got it from a poor breeder who did not care about the tempermants of the dogs, or he did not take the time, effort and commitment to train, socialize and care for this dog.) and both dogs can be home alone, but be sure to execise and stimulate your puppy as it could get bored and chew things. Since the staffie needs more exercise, you should really take care in wearing it out before leaving the house! Hope i’ve helped you some!!:)
Also, staffies are nicknamed the "nanny dog" because of their love and tolerance for children. They do not generally make good gaurd dogs because their more likely to lick strangers to death! These dogs are naturally protective, as with any terrier, but are very loving, loyal and want to please their owners!

We got a Boston terrier for those exact reasons. A Boston is not a true terrier because all of those qualities have been bred out of them. They play hard and crash hard (good couch potatoes once playtime is over). Not very vocal, just warning barks when strangers are at door (a good thing for us). Quick learners, single coat (so they will get too cold or hot, but not shed much), great with strangers, cats (if taught), etc .
All dogs won’t be perfect, will make mistakes and will annoy you at times, but so fulfilling.
Pugs are great, but shed. Bichons have the tendency to be more vocal. Staffordshire Terriers are high energy, need lots of exercise.
A great resource is AnimalPlanet.com. They have a dog breed selector quiz on under the Petsource tool bar. That’s how we were matched with our best breed.
I hate to say this, but Christmas is not the greatest time to get a dog, maybe the week after Christmas because the dog will need as much calm adjustment as possible. Just want you and your new dog to have a smooth transition.
I’ve got three kids, 3,5,7 and it seems like I’m spending as much time training them the proper way to handle our new puppy as I am with the dog herself. All dogs have the potential for nipping or biting, and it’s not just the aggressive breeds: Golden Retrievers are on the top bite list. What happens is the kids corner the dog or don’t see the warning signs from the dog and the dog reacts, it’s preventable, so teaching mutual respect is at the top of my priorities (as well as making my kids the boss of the dog, too, so they aren’t seen as litter mates).
Again, rewarding but a lot of brain work until we all get into the good habits and find our routines.

I’ll just quickly point out a few things:
You will have to be SO careful with your child and a small dog. No dragging or picking up - small dogs are fragile.
Aggression is not down to breed, but the owners and training. Put most dogs in an excitable, noisy home where they’re being jumped on constantly by children, you will end up with a snappy dog.
No dog is obedient at first.
I’d suggest going to your shelter and getting an adult dog. These will be trained, you’ll know which ones can be homed with kids, don’t bark much, their exercise needs, how protective they are, etc.
IMO, it’s never a good idea to bring a puppy into a home unless all children are 11+. Puppies bite, and this can make a child extremely scared of the dog - my cousin now is scared to come round because my Labradoodle puppy has snapped at her and bitten her a number of times.

I have a golden retriever….she is great and never bites anyone and is also cute! They are a little bit or close to knee height and are cutest as puppies! But the reason we got her, is that golden retrievers are the best family dogs and we have young children in our family too! (3 mounths,4,5,7 & 11)
so overall they are the best family dogs and i would definetly check them out!
thanks - tomboygirl96
